2020 HIGHLIGHTS - A YEAR IN REVIEW

2020 was the best year ever! Ok, I’d imagine not many of us said that. I think we all thought 2020 would be a huge year … just in a slightly different way than it ended up being. In my 13+ years of photographing weddings, this was perhaps the wildest year yet. Like most of you, the Flynn fam had some high highs and low lows.

With most of my full weddings moving to 2021, I was lucky to get to enjoy more time at home with my wife, 3-year old, and pup. Now that we’re expecting our second baby any day now, and after unexpectedly losing our beloved dog around Christmas, that time running through sprinklers and swinging in hammocks this summer seems even sweeter.

That lull in weddings also meant I was able to photograph way more elopements and families (which I love but never have as much time for as I’d like.) So many weddings turned into intimate elopements with a precious few people, and while the group was smaller, the celebration wasn’t diminished at all. Covid may have turned the world upside down, but it was inspiring to see how people still embraced love and joy in the midst of uncertainty and hardship.

When I was putting this post together, it was so cool to see the unique ways all the couples chose to celebrate in 2020 - little urban nooks, atop a cliffside in the San Juan Islands, on a ferry, in parents’ backyards, newly bought homes (yay working-from-home induced claustrophobia!), cabins and on UW’s charming campus. So many memorable, meaningful places.

Every year this post is kinda my Christmas-card-meets-love-letter to all the people who trusted me, or are going to trust me, to document these important parts of their lives. After everything we’ve been through in 2020, those moments are even more precious, and to me, even more important to record. They’re the anchors we can look back at and hold onto through the rocky times.
